Welcome
- By Rick Schupbach
- Elementary Physical Education Specialist
Co-Director of the
Grundy Center PE4life Academy

Providing a quality physical education experience for students at Grundy Center is truly a team effort. It involves a
tremendous commitment from our school board and administrative team as we take "physical education outside the walls of the
gymnasium" and into our community.
Challenging leadership and support from my building principal, Wendy Cruse, and my superintendent, John Stevens, has
underscored the importance of the connection between an "Active Body and Active Mind." This support, along with expert mentoring
by former NASPE Teacher of the Year and Co-Director of the Grundy Center PE4life Academy, Beth Kirkpatrick, provides me with
the vision to constantly quest for futuristic and cutting edge best practices.
I am extremely proud of the physical edcuation team we have assembled at Grundy center K-12. Former Polar Scholar
George Centeio is our High School Physical Education instructor and supervisor of our middle school physical education program,
which is taught by a team of four polar scholars.
The Physical Education program also features a community outreach strategy as we have a our Physical Education Fitness Room
double as our community YMCA. Adult and Senior Life Fitness Classes are held and conducted in school facilities to help promote
healthier living for all community members, not just our students.
Finally, our seven newest members to the Physical Education team are the Polar Scholar Teachers, provided to the Grundy
Center Community School District through a unique partnership with the University of Northern Iowa. I am truly blessed to
be surrounded by highly motivated and outstanding people to "energize and educate all ages" in Grundy Center for healthier
living.
Grundy Center / Polar / UNI Partnership
Grundy Center schools have embedded Polar technology throughout the curriculum. Fitness technology including heart
rate monitors, pocket PCs and fitness assessment systems are integral parts of daily lesson plans.
A collaboration
between Grundy Center School District, UNI and Polar Electro Inc. has created a Master's degree program that uniquely blends
the resources of each institution to provide state-of-the-art information to enhance the impact of physical education through
the use of technology.
