Grundy Center Lady Spartan Golf has a rich tradition of excellence dating back to their first state appearance in 1970.
This history includes 18 state appearances, 23 all-state players, 10 state titles and three state runner-up finishes.
These accolades make the Lady Spartan golf program one of the most storied in state history. The Lady Spartan’s first
state title occurred in 1991 and put in motion a decade of dominance that brought six state titles and one runner-up finish.
Included in the streak was the history making year of 1997, when Grundy Center became the 1st small school to win the overall
state golf title. They repeated the feat again in 1998. The new millennium has done little to slow down the golf juggernaut
as the Lady Spartan linksters have added 4 more titles, one runner-up finish and a 4th and 5th place finish at state
since 2000.
The Lady Spartans have been represented by some of the best players in state history. Tracey Voss
started the trend of state place winners and future collegiate players for Grundy Center in 1990. Voss’ two 2nd place
finishes, in 1990-91, set the tone for an unusual occurrence at the 1992 state tournament. Voss posted the low score at the
state meet, but had not qualified individually, thus denying her an individual state title. However, she managed to lead the
Lady Spartans to their 2nd consecutive team title. Sister combinations have been a big part of the Grundy Center success.
Trina and Kylie Dirks are arguably the most accomplished sister act in state history. They played from 1995-2000, and between
them claimed 4 individual state titles and 2 runner-up finishes while leading the Lady Spartans to five state titles and one
runner-up finish. The Iverson sisters, Sarah and Carla, competed from 1993-1998. During this time the Lady Spartans won three
titles and had a runner-up finish. Carla finished 2nd twice and 4th at the state meet, all 3 times finishing behind teammate
Trina Dirks. The last sister act accounts for the most recent Lady Spartan success. Katie and Abby Schuller led the way as
the Lady Spartans won the 2005 state title. Katie finished state runner-up and Abby 5th individually. Abby led the Lady Spartans
to a state title in 2007 with her third straight all-state performance.
Returning all-stater Jocilyn Onnen
and all-conference players Ashley Appel and Jenn Simms will make the 2010 season prospects bright. Since 1992 13 players from
Grundy Center have gone on to compete at the collegiate level, three at the Division I level. In addition Tracey Voss
earned All-America status at Simpson College and has been inducted into the Grundy Center and Simpson Sports Hall of Fame
for her accomplishments in golf. In addition, Trina Dirks has been inducted into the Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame for
her golf accomplishments while in high school and college.
