Roberta Parsons
My name is Roberta Parsons,
however people really know me as “Bobbie”. I am Canadian, and I come from an island on the east coast called,
Newfoundland.
I spent about 8 years of training for soccer in Newfoundland before moving to the United States on a full NCAA Division 1 Soccer Scholarship.
I studied Physical Education for four years at Coastal Carolina
University, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Balancing a full course load and full time training with the soccer team
was a challenge; I emerged from the experience as a stronger person, with great memories and achievements.
I am the youngest of
four children; I have 2 brothers and a sister (my sister also moved to the USA
on a full Soccer scholar ship, and is now a teacher in Virginia.)
I have the two most supportive parents anyone could ever dream of, and I miss them everyday. I am very excited to come to
Grundy Center, Iowa because
of what I have heard and seen of this great community. I hope such an experience can ease the sting of being so far from my
home, and also I hope to add value to what is already an outstanding Physical Education Program.
Cassandra Goodweiler
Hi there…My
name is Cassandra Goodweiler. I am from Stoughton, Wisconsin which is a small Norwegian community just outside of beautiful Madison, WI. My family is a big part of my life and I feel very fortunate to be supported by them in everything
that I do. My mom, Nancy, is also a physical education teacher in Madison and has been a great resource and inspiration in my journey to become a physical educator. I will
be joined in Grundy Center by my long-term inamorato Will, who will also be a graduate student at UNI. He will be getting his Master’s Degree
but his will be in Exercise Science/Strength and Conditioning. We will be sharing in both the excitement and challenges of
graduate school. My family and I enjoy traveling, grilling out, watching the Green Bay Packers, and relaxing in each others
company.
My background…In
January 2006, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh with a Physical Education major and Adapted P.E. minor. I played on the softball team at the University
and was fortunate enough to travel to Australia to play Aussie teams. Before graduating, I also traveled overseas to New Zealand to complete my student
teaching experience. New Zealand was stunning and I plan to go back someday. Some of my interests/hobbies
include: playing softball, exercising, camping, watching movies, laughing and eating ice cream.
So,
how I got here…Over the summer 2005, I met Rick Schupbach at a physical education workshop and was instantly intrigued
by the Polar Scholar Program and what was happening here in Grundy Center. Ever since that day I knew I had to be a part of
this program. I am excited to learn, grow, meet the Grundy Center community and be surrounded by people that exude excitement, energy and have a true passion for life.
Jake
Glover
I was born and
raised in Virginia, and until I moved out here I was completely
positive that the sun and moon revolved around the Commonwealth. I leave behind
a beautiful and talented girlfriend, unwaveringly supportive family and countless friends and colleagues that are the
foundation of who I am.
I originally
graduated from Virginia Commonwealth
University with a degree in Exercise Science in 2002. Immediately after graduation I served as the Assistant Fitness/Wellness Coordinator for VCU under Dr. Eric
West. During my time in the wellness program at VCU, I designed and implemented
countless individualized fitness programs, co-organized a national fitness expo, facilitated a myriad of fitness/wellness
topical workshops, instructed a variety of different fitness classes and most importantly…grew professionally and personally. I eventually started my own personal training business focusing primarily on clients
with special needs such as stroke and brain trauma. A coaching experience sparked
an interest in teaching that eventually became a life-altering flame. I decided
to return to VCU to obtain a degree in Health and Physical Education, and I now view that decision as the turning point in
my life. The professors at VCU made me realize that a physical educator does
not have a “job”…he or she has a responsibility.
We, as physical
educators, are responsible for inspiring students to be healthy and expose them to activities and ideas that will allow them
to stay inspired throughout their lifetime. We are also responsible for galvanizing
our community behind the healthy principles that we impart on our students through active communication with the parents and
leaders of said community. This town and this program are the physical manifestation
of that ideal, and I am honored to a part of this.

Kelly Wieser
Greetings! My name is Kelly Wieser and I come to you
from St. Louis, Missouri. Originally from Jackson (population just over 11, 000), my family now resides in Cape
Girardeau. My father has owned his own business for over 30 years. I have an older sister, two younger brothers, a
brother in-law, and two very special nieces (Adrianna and Shelby). My mother lives in beautiful Colorado.
Personal hobbies consist of watching sporting events of all kinds, reading mystery novels, spending time with friends, and
supporting my beloved St. Louis Cardinals and Tennessee Lady Vols.
I hold two
Bachelor degrees, one in Psychology/Sociology from Maryville University where I played softball and another in Physical Education from the University of Missouri-St.
Louis (UMSL). While at UMSL, I had the good fortune of studying with fabulous faculty - Dr. Tom Loughrey and Sherri
Parker. For the past ten years I have coached softball in the Kirkwood Wolverines
select organization. I was a physical education instructor last year in Washington, Missouri where I worked with
top-notch teachers and stupendous students.
Over
the years, I have eaten a lot of toasted ravioli and frozen custard but exercised very little. A bit hypocritical
for a physical education teacher! While in Iowa,
I look forward to making healthy lifestyle changes, becoming a productive member of the Grundy Center family, and learning from
the best in my chosen field. I will be leading a fifth grade physical education class and seventh grade Health course. The
opportunity to take part in the Polar Scholar program is extremely exciting and I am grateful to be here!
MICHAEL
HALIM
Hi, my name is Michael Halim. I am
from St. Louis, Missouri and have lived around the St. Louis area for about the last five years. I started my post high school journey by attending Benedictine
College, a small private school located in Atchison
Kansas. While there I studied Physical Education and played football for two
years. After that I moved to St. Louis to attend
the University of Missouri St. Louis
to finish my undergraduate work. I graduated in 2005 with a Bachelors degree
in both Physical Education and Health.
I grew up in Rosebud, Missouri,
a very small town located about 75 miles west of St. Louis. The population of Rosebud was around 300, so there was definitely no cultural shock
for me when I arrived in Grundy. I graduated high school from Owensville High School in 1999. In high school
I played football and ran track all four years.
While in Rosebud I grew up with both
my parents and my three brothers. Matt and Marty are older than me and Mitch is my younger brother, and yes my parents gave
us all the same initials not just first names but middle names also, everyone is MKH.
The welcome I have received from Grundy Center has
been amazing as well as the closeness I have witnessed of this community. I am just thrilled to have this opportunity to grow
professionally but more importantly as a person and become a part of this great area.
Evan Totka
I was born May 4, 1982 and raised in the same house for 24 years in Laurence
Harbor, New Jersey. Moving to Iowa
is going to be a new experience for me in many ways. I graduated from Montclair
State University with a degree in Physical Education
and Exercise Science in December of 2005, which is only thirty minutes away from my hometown. As a student I was a representative
of the New Jersey Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance as well as on the district and national
level. I was also the president of the Panzer Student Association, the physical
education student club at my school. Being involved in these different associations and programs has guided me in being a
leader and has lead my education to flourish far beyond the college walls. Attending multiple conventions and seminars across
the country has opened my eyes to the different styles, methods, and approaches being used in the physical education and health
classroom. Quickly after graduation my career began at Little Falls School #1 in New Jersey,
a middle school right around the corner from the university. I enjoyed every second of this experience and learned more than
you can imagine from my students in the six months spent as their teacher. Not only is physical education and health important
for my career, I am always active, lifting weights, playing golf, or doing something fun to improve my personal fitness level.
I am looking forward to participating in this unique experience and taking on this great challenge as a Polar Scholar.
George
Harnick
Hi. I was born in Flint Michigan and was raised in a small town named Swartz Creek. I graduated from Swartz Creek
High School in 2000 and from Michigan State University with a degree in Kinesiology in 2005. This past year has been
spent student teaching in the Lansing area at both the middle school and elementary levels providing me with 9 months of lead
teaching experience. I have always loved athletics and physical activity competing in baseball, basketball, and track
and field throughout school. I also enjoy golfing, running, shooting sports, hunting, fishing, and weight training.
I love teaching as well, and the mix between my love for exercise and teaching seems to be an excellent fit for me.
My whole family is based around teaching, and that is most likely why I enjoy it so much. I plan to make my experience
in Grundy Center better than any of my previous experiences, and I am sure that the town's warm hospitality will make this
task easy to accomplish. My duties include teaching PE at the middle school as well as 25th Hour PE. This should
be a wonderful experience and I look forward to it everyday.

Comments from the Grundy Center Community:
As a senior citizen and a city council member of Grundy Center I would like to express my appreciation for
all that you, the school system, Polar, and UNI have done to bring the polar students into our community. These students are
such a great asset to those of us that need their assistance to become more active and healthier citizens. We welcome them
with open arms when they come and we appreciate all they do while they are here. We do so miss them when they must move on
but we wish the very best in life for them!! Again, THANK YOU
!
